That kind of language is not always AI-generated, and AI-generated content is not automatically low-quality. But the sameness raises a real question: how much law firm website content is being created with AI, and is that content actually showing up in competitive search results?
We analyzed thousands of law firm webpages and organic search results to find out. Across the top-eight organic search results we reviewed, 18.99% showed AI-generation signals. In other words, AI-assisted content is not just being published. It is appearing in visible search positions.
What We Found
Our analysis found that AI-generation signals are meaningfully present across law firm website content and organic search results, but they are not dominant across the sample.
A few findings stood out:
- 22.15% of firm-owned pages analyzed showed AI-generation signals.
- 38.75% of law firm websites had at least some AI-flagged content among the pages reviewed.
- 18.99% of top-eight organic search results showed AI-generation signals.
- AI-flagged content appeared at nearly the same rate in the top three results as it did in positions four through eight.
- Mass tort was the clearest practice-area outlier, with 48.84% of high-ranking results showing AI-generation signals.
The takeaway is practical: AI-assisted content is already part of the law firm search landscape. But the data does not suggest that AI use alone determines whether content ranks.
How Common Is AI-Generated Content on Law Firm Websites?
We conducted a large-scale analysis of law firm website content to measure two things: how frequently AI-generated signals appear on law firm websites, and how often AI-flagged content shows up in high-ranking organic search results.
The study was designed to be both broad and specific. We collected data at scale, then analyzed clearly defined subsets of that data to answer separate questions about AI content usage and search visibility. This allowed us to evaluate real-world patterns without relying on assumptions, anecdotal examples, or isolated case studies.
The result is a clearer picture of how AI-generated content is appearing across law firm websites and where that content is most visible in organic search.

A Note on Scope and Page Counts
Because this study examined both content creation and search visibility, it relied on multiple datasets that served different purposes.
The 7,029 law firm websites represent the primary population under analysis. The broader 11,577 total websites include additional domains, such as legal directories and third-party sites, that appeared in search results during SERP analysis.
The 14,110 pages reflect all pages collected or processed across the study. The 4,143 firm-owned pages were the focused subset used to evaluate AI-generated signals on law firm websites. A separate subset of 2,506 organic search results was used to evaluate how AI-generated content appears in high-ranking search results.
This layered approach allowed us to answer separate questions about content prevalence and search visibility without treating every dataset as interchangeable.
What We Analyzed and Why
We approached the study in two parts.
First, we examined how common AI-generated content is on law firm websites. For this portion of the analysis, we focused on firm-owned content pages, including practice area pages and articles, and excluded homepages and non-content files. A sample of 4,143 firm-owned pages was evaluated to determine how frequently AI-generated signals appear across law firm sites.
Second, we analyzed how often AI-flagged content appears in high-ranking search results. This portion of the study reviewed organic search results across major U.S. cities and practice areas, with a focus on the top eight rankings. We evaluated whether AI-generated content appeared among those high-visibility results and how often it appeared.
Separating these two questions allowed us to evaluate each clearly without blending content creation patterns with search visibility outcomes.
How the Data Was Collected
Using a combination of internal datasets, third-party APIs, and automated analysis workflows, we collected and evaluated law firm website content at scale. Pages were sampled from firm websites and live organic search results, then categorized based on their role in the study.
The analysis used tools and services including Python, SQLAlchemy, SQLite, SpyFu, SerpAPI, API League, Originality.ai, Anaconda / Jupyter Environment, and MeanPug Digital’s GoL API.
Together, these tools supported data collection, page-level analysis, AI-content evaluation, and comparison of AI-detection results against organic search ranking data.
How AI-Generation Signals Were Identified
Each page included in the analysis was evaluated using AI-detection tools that assign a likelihood score based on language patterns and other content signals. Pages were classified as likely or unlikely to show AI-generation signals based on a consistent scoring approach.
These classifications were used only for aggregate analysis. The goal was to identify broader patterns at scale, including how frequently AI-generated signals appear on law firm websites and how often AI-flagged pages appear in high-ranking organic search results.
Because AI-detection tools are probabilistic, the results should be read as directional signals rather than absolute determinations about any individual page.
Measuring AI Use in Law Firm Website Content
The study was designed to answer two related but distinct questions: how common AI-generated signals are across sampled law firm website content, and how often AI-flagged content appears in high-ranking organic search results.
To keep those questions clear, we evaluated content prevalence and search visibility separately.
Research Question 1: How Common Is AI-Generated Law Firm Content?
This part of the study addressed two related questions:
- What percentage of sampled law firm website content showed AI-flagged signals?
- What percentage of law firm websites included at least some AI-flagged content among the pages reviewed?
The goal here was to measure AI-content prevalence at both the page level and the firm level. In other words, we looked at how much sampled law firm content showed AI-generation signals and how widespread that usage was across the law firms analyzed.
To keep the analysis focused on ongoing content creation, we explicitly excluded homepages from AI sampling. Homepages are less likely to reflect routine content production, while practice area pages, articles, and other content pages are more representative of how firms are publishing new website content over time.
Research Question 2: How Often Does AI-Generated Content Appear in Search Results?
The second part of the study focused on search visibility rather than content prevalence. Specifically, we asked:
- What percentage of high-ranking organic search results showed AI-generation signals?
- How did that percentage differ between the top three results and positions four through eight?
- How did AI-generation signals vary by practice area?
This analysis focused on organic search results across major U.S. cities and practice areas, with the goal of understanding whether AI-flagged content is appearing in the search positions law firms are most likely to care about.
How We Defined Search Visibility, AI Usage, and Study Assumptions
To answer the research questions outlined above, we needed to be clear about three things:
- What the study means by search visibility
- How AI usage was calculated across firms and pages
- What assumptions shaped the design and interpretation of the analysis
Defining these terms upfront helps clarify what the study can measure and what it does not attempt to prove.
What Search Visibility Means in This Study
In this study, we are not evaluating content quality, engagement, conversion rates, or business outcomes. Instead, we define search visibility based on organic ranking position.
Specifically, content is considered highly visible if it appeared within the top eight organic results for competitive, practice-area-specific queries across major U.S. cities.
We further segmented those rankings into two visibility tiers:
- Top three positions, which typically receive the greatest share of user attention
- Positions four through eight, which remain visible but are generally less dominant
This definition allowed us to compare where AI-flagged content appeared across high-visibility organic search results. The study does not attempt to infer user behavior, lead quality, or business impact beyond ranking position.
How AI Prevalence Was Calculated
AI prevalence was measured in a way that captured both how much AI-flagged content appeared in the sampled pages and how widely that content appeared across firms.
Each page included in the analysis was evaluated using AI-detection tools that assign a likelihood score based on language structure, patterns, and other content signals. Pages were classified as likely or unlikely to show AI-generation signals using a consistent scoring approach.
From there, we calculated prevalence using multiple complementary metrics:
- Page-level prevalence, which measures the percentage of sampled pages that showed AI-generation signals
- Firm-level adoption, which measures the percentage of law firm websites that included at least one AI-flagged page
- Distribution across firms, which examines how AI usage varied by firm rather than assuming uniform behavior
This approach avoids reducing AI usage to a single headline number. A firm with one AI-flagged page was treated differently from a firm with AI-generation signals across many sampled pages, and those differences were preserved in the analysis.
How AI-Generation Signals Were Evaluated in Search Results
To evaluate how AI-flagged content appears in search results, we applied the same classification process to a separate dataset drawn from live search rankings.
This portion of the analysis focuses only on ranking within the top eight organic results. For those pages, we measured:
- The overall percentage of high-ranking organic search results that showed AI-generation signals
- Differences in AI prevalence between the top three positions and positions four through eight
- Variation in AI prevalence by practice area
Importantly, this analysis does not attempt to explain why a page ranks where it did. It measures whether AI-flagged content was present among the organic results users are most likely to see, and how frequently it appeared at different visibility levels.
Key Assumptions Underlying the Study
Like any empirical analysis, this study relies on assumptions that shape its scope and interpretation.
First, the study treats ranking position as a reasonable proxy for search visibility. Higher-ranking pages are considered more visible and, by extension, more competitive.
Second, AI-detection is treated as probabilistic rather than absolute. Individual classifications may be imperfect, but applying the same scoring approach consistently across a large sample allows us to identify broader patterns at scale. For that reason, the study focuses on aggregate trends rather than individual pages or firms.
Third, the study assumes that homepages are less representative of ongoing content creation behavior. Including them would have reduced the measured share of AI-flagged content without adding insight into how firms are publishing practice area pages, articles, and other content over time.
Finally, the study treats AI-content prevalence and search visibility as related but distinct questions. Measuring how often AI-generated content appears on law firm websites requires a different dataset and analysis than measuring how often AI-flagged content appears in high-ranking organic search results.
How Much Law Firm Website Content Shows AI-Generation Signals?
The first research question focused on prevalence: how often AI-generation signals appear on law firm websites and how widespread is that usage across firms.
Across all firm-owned pages analyzed, 22.15% showed AI-generation signals. At the firm level, 38.75% of law firm websites had at least some AI-flagged content among the pages reviewed.
In practical terms, AI-generation signals did not appear in the majority of sampled law firm content, but they were meaningfully present.
How Often Does AI-Generated Content Appear in High-Ranking Organic Search Results?
After examining how frequently AI-generation signals appear on law firm websites, we analyzed how often AI-flagged content appears in high-visibility organic search results.
To answer this question, we evaluated 2,506 organic search results drawn from:
- The 100 largest U.S. cities by population
- A fixed set of search queries representing each practice area
- Google organic results collected by query and location
To understand how AI-flagged content was distributed across search visibility, we segmented results into the same two visibility tiers defined earlier: top three positions and positions four through eight.

In other words, AI-flagged content appeared at similar rates throughout the first page of organic search results, rather than being concentrated in lower-ranking positions.

When segmented by practice area, AI-generation signals among high-ranking organic search results varied more meaningfully:

Mass tort stood out as the clearest outlier, with nearly half of high-ranking mass tort results showing AI-generation signals.
Because large legal aggregators often publish high volumes of templated content, we also ran a validation pass that removed major aggregator sites, including Justia, FindLaw, Super Lawyers, and Avvo.
After excluding those sites, 20.56% of top-eight search results still showed AI-generation signals. In other words, AI-flagged content continued to appear in high-ranking organic results even when major legal aggregators were removed from the dataset.
How Nervous Should You Be About Your Law Firm’s Website?
Not very, if your content is useful, accurate, original, and properly reviewed.
The most important takeaway from this study is that AI-generated content is not automatically an SEO problem. The method of creation matters less than the quality and usefulness of the final content.
Is the writing clear? Is it accurate? Does it answer the reader’s question? Does it contribute something useful for a prospective client, referral source, or website visitor? If the answer to these questions is yes, the content is in a much stronger position.

That aligns with Google’s stated approach to AI-generated content. In practical terms, the issue is not AI use by itself. The issue is whether the final content is useful, accurate, original, and created to help readers rather than primarily to manipulate search results.
AI use in the legal industry is also already widespread:
- Clio’s 2025 Legal Trends Report reported that 79% of legal professionals use AI in their firms.
- The American Bar Association’s 2025 survey found that about 30% of all legal professionals are using AI in some capacity, and about 46% are using some kind of AI-based technology tools.
- A 2024 LexisNexis survey found that 45% of Am Law 200 firms are using generative AI now for legal matters, compared to 22% of other large firms.
The point is not that AI is risk-free. It is that AI use alone does not appear to be the issue. For law firms, the real question is whether AI-assisted content is being created with the right editorial, ethical, and quality-control processes in place.
Used carefully, AI can support content strategy, drafting, editing, research workflows, search optimization, and generative engine optimization. Used carelessly, it can create serious risks, including inaccurate claims, fabricated sources, generic writing, confidentiality concerns, and content that sounds like every other law firm website on the internet.
The Real Concerns for AI Content on Law Firm Websites in 2026
AI-generated content can be useful, but it still needs human oversight. A strong editor should review AI-assisted content the same way they would review any other draft: for accuracy, clarity, usefulness, tone, sourcing, and fit with the firm’s brand and ethical obligations.
There are a few areas law firms should take especially seriously.
Data and communications privacy.
AI-generated content can introduce risk when prompts, drafts, transcripts, client examples, or internal strategy details are processed by third-party tools. Firms should make sure that no confidential client data, privileged material, or sensitive information is shared during content creation.
Accountability to clients.
For ordinary website content, law firms may not need to disclose every instance of AI-assisted drafting. But AI use still raises questions of supervision, communication, and trust. A prospective client may not care whether AI helped draft a blog post, but they may care if you use it to generate a response to a review, website inquiry, or social media comment.
Reliability and accuracy.
AI-generated content needs careful fact-checking. Law firms should verify legal statements, statistics, citations, links, jurisdiction-specific claims, and any source material before publication. AI tools can invent facts, misstate sources, or generate citations that look credible but do not actually support the claim.
Asking for sources can help, but every source should still be checked independently before the content goes live. The risk is not theoretical. Lawyers have already faced consequences for using AI-generated material without adequate review, including matters involving fabricated quotes and fake case citations. For law firms, that makes human review, source-checking, and editorial accountability essential.
Environmental effects.
AI tools and data centers require substantial energy and infrastructure. For most law firms, this may not be the primary content concern, but it is worth considering, especially for firms whose work or values touch environmental, public interest, or civil justice issues.
The safest approach is simple: use AI as a tool, not as a substitute for professional judgment. Every AI-assisted page should still have a responsible human editor, clear sourcing, accurate claims, and a reason to exist beyond filling space on a website.
