Generative Engine Popularity

As answer engines grow in popularity, competition for visibility grows with them. That creates new opportunities for law firms, but also raises the stakes for earning attention in AI-generated results. The winners of today aren’t necessarily the winners of tomorrow, but the current landscape makes one thing clear: AI search is becoming an increasingly important part of how people discover information online.

For law firms, that makes it increasingly important to structure content around the signals that answer engines rely on, including:

  • Use clear structure and markup. Descriptive HTML, relevant schema markup, and well-organized content can make it easier for search engines and AI systems to understand the meaning and relationships within your pages.
  • Content that is written in a conversational style and easily understood.
  • Listings in cited sources. Run a simple query through ChatGPT like “recommendations for a personal injury lawyer in new york” and you’re bound to get results like this:
ChatGPT search results for personal injury lawyers in New York City, showing cited law firm listings and map results.
At the bottom of these results, you’ll see the option to see what sources were cited to generate these results.
    ChatGPT Result with Citations Button
Click that button to see which sources ChatGPT is citing. Those sources can help identify where your firm may need stronger visibility, mentions, or placement.

When GEO efforts gain traction, referral traffic from ChatGPT can grow quickly. Here is one example from a personal injury law firm client:

Line graph showing ChatGPT referral traffic for a law firm increasing from 0 to 45 monthly active users over six months.

Over six months, ChatGPT traffic grew from 0 monthly active users to 45. While the absolute numbers were still modest, the trajectory showed how quickly AI-driven referral traffic can begin to build.

Differences Between Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)

Both SEO and GEO share a common primary objective: To provide users with content that fulfills their search intent. That means building authoritative, trustworthy, conversational content and presenting it in a format easily digestible to the end user. However, there are a set of key differences between the goals, mechanisms, and result tracking between optimization for search and optimization for answer engines like ChatGPT.

Goals of SEO vs. GEO

While GEO and SEO share a common objective, the user experience and optimization goals can differ significantly. SEO often focuses on driving users to a website through transactional and commercial-intent searches, while GEO is more focused on helping a law firm’s content appear, inform, and build trust within AI-generated answers. In practice, that can make GEO an important touchpoint earlier in a potential client’s research and decision-making process.

Tracking Results of SEO vs. GEO

The biggest difference in tracking SEO vs. GEO effectiveness comes down to the maturity of the ecosystem. SEO has been around for decades, and its tools, methodologies, and frameworks are well established. GEO is still nascent. New tracking and auditing tools emerge regularly, but there is not yet a single accepted source of truth for measuring performance.

Law Firm GEO Tools

The SEO tool landscape is relatively mature, with a handful of established platforms forming the core of many agencies’ workflows:

Most agencies supplement these platforms with specialized tools, but one of these core suites typically serves as the foundation of the SEO stack.

The GEO tool landscape is more fragmented. When optimizing for ChatGPT and other generative engines, it helps to group tools by function.

Content Development and Optimization

Optimizing content for AI search visibility starts with making it clear, well structured, and easy for both people and machines to understand. Relevant schema markup can support that process, but strong content and organization come first. Many established SEO and content optimization tools now include features that can also support GEO workflows, including:

  • Yoast – WordPress plugin that makes writing optimized content simpler.
  • Surfer SEO – content analyzer and assistant to build content that satisfies searcher intent and is appropriately focused on the right keywords
  • AlsoAsked – visualize the “people also asked” tree from Google

Visibility Tracking

Brand visibility and sentiment monitoring, citation tracking, and visibility scoring are some of the key bits of functionality provided by tools like:

  • Profound – AI search visibility platform for tracking brand presence, citations, sentiment, and competitive performance across answer engines.
  • Goodie – an AI search optimization platform for researching search behavior, monitoring visibility, identifying optimization opportunities, and measuring results across major answer engines.
  • AI Visibility – a focused platform for monitoring visibility across AI search platforms and surfacing strategic optimization opportunities.

As an AI optimization agency, MeanPug is also developing proprietary tools and processes to help law firms measure and improve visibility across generative search platforms.

Auditing

At the end of the day, ChatGPT and other answer engines rely on content just like traditional search engines. So, it’s unsurprising that there’s meaningful crossover between GEO and SEO tools when it comes to auditing and monitoring your site for issues and opportunities. Some of our favorites for this include:

  • Screaming Frog – a powerful website crawler for identifying technical SEO issues, analyzing site structure, and running detailed audits at scale. Its interface is utilitarian, but few tools offer the same depth and flexibility for technical analysis.
  • Conductor Monitoring – real-time website monitoring for detecting technical SEO and AI search issues, tracking site changes, and alerting teams to problems before they affect visibility.
  • Semrush – a comprehensive SEO platform with site auditing, keyword research, competitive analysis, and other functionality that can support both traditional search and GEO workflows.
